A seahawk somehow managed to take down a grizzly bear in Chicago on Sunday. What’s next, is a pigeon going to eat an elephant? The Bears blew another game, and lost for surprisingly only the second time this year. And to a 2-2 team that lost to Orton’s lowly 2-4 Broncos, and who’s two wins came against the winless-until-today 9ers and the now 2-4 Chargers. WTF!? I’d like to blame someone, but with so much blame going to the players and coaches in recent weeks, I’m going to put this one on the fans. Yeah, that’s right, I’m calling YOU out!
But there wasn’t much to cheer about after we scored in the first two minutes – until the last two minutes. Seven Hester returned his record-tying 13th kick for a TD (his 9th punt return) while Earl Bennett laid out the punter with a blindside decleater that was great payback for his leaving us inside our 10 yard line 6 times. But it was too little too late because the offense sucked and the defense blew.
The offense was offensive. We were 0 for 12 on third downs, making us 3 for 40 in our last 3 games. We only ran 14 times after 42 last week, and only gained 61 yards after 218 last week. How does that happen!? Two of those carries were scrambles by Cutler, and one was the 24 yard scamper on 4th and 1 by Chester “the Molester” Taylor. If you take away those three, we went 18 yards on 11 carries. That’s not good for a team that “gets off the bus running” and has a concussed QB without a line to block for him.
And the defense was weak at best, allowing 350 yards and a season-high 23 points. And they allowed Seattle to go 7 for 18 on third downs. Sure, Briggs was out, and Urlacher calls him the best LB on our team. But they didn’t have a single sack or a single takeaway. The best thing I can say about them is they had the best seats in the house to watch us lose to a team that we’re actually better than.
The Cutler Monstrosity
The Butler returned after sitting out a game with a bruised scrotal sack, and I have four words for you: Bring back Todd Collins! The Buttnut threw for 290 yards, but most of those yards were short throws that turned into long plays. He only completed 43.6% (17-39) of his passes and was sacked 6 times – that’s 23 sacks in 4.5 games, which is over 5 per game. And Sunday he lost to a team that Orton – and our many draft picks – have already beaten.
Game Ball
In an interesting twist, our staff is taking last week’s Game Ball back from Matt Forte, who ran for 11 yards on 8 carries – 155 fewer yards than last week. Not counting last week’s game, that gives him an average of 29 yards per game and 2.5 per carry. As Charles Barkley would say, “That’s Turrible.”
Summary
The Bears fall to 4-2, but with GB losing, we remain alone in first place. We’ve got to be the worst first place team in the NFL right now. And with Washington coming to town next week, it doesn’t look like it will last long. But since I think they’re going to blow us out, I’d put money on the Bears.
