12. Seattle, Rookie QB Stun Bears at Soldierz

For the third year in a row, the Bears lost a regular season game at home to Seattle.  That brings up two questions:  1) Who the hell is scheduling these games?  And 2) Why can’t we go to the west coast and win but they can come here and win?  And this time, Cutler and Forte weren’t hurt, and the Seahawks had a rookie QB.  That’s two losses to two rookie QB’s in three weeks, people.  It’s too bad that we didn’t have a player kill his girlfriend and then himself the day before the game because at least then we’d have an excuse.  Instead, the Bears were left looking as dumbfounded as a nun finding out she’s pregnant.

The Bears defense was looking in all directions for answers

If it weren’t for a 5-game wining streak last year, and a 6-gamer this year, we’d probably all just be sitting back counting the W’s and L’s and hoping for the best.  But when you add those streaks to our having our best QB ever, our best WR ever, and arguably the best defense in the NFL, the expectations are taken to a whole new level.  We now expect to win each week.  And a game like this that could otherwise be explained, quite simply, cannot be.

The Bears D fighting with Seattle while digging for their pride

Back and Forth
It was a teeter-taughter type game, with us coming out uncharacteristically strong.  We dominated the first quarter while doubling Seattle’s yardage.  We got a sack on our second play, recovered a fumble on our fifth, and capitalized on it with a TD after benefitting from 2 Seattle penalties.

3. group

Pissed, upset, confused and glad to just be the punter

But after a 13-play, 73-yard drive, Lovie got cocky at the beginning of the second quarter and tried to put the game away.  He went for it on fourth and 1 at Seattle’s 15 and failed.  And that switched the momentum to Seattle, who went on to dominate the second quarter.  They gained 179 yards and scored 10 points while we punted twice.

Urlacher:  “How do you feel about that call today?”
Garza: “How do you think I feel?  Betrayed, bewildered…”

Then things swung back our way in the third quarter.  We out-gained them by almost 100 yards, taking the lead back on a 94-yard TD drive.  But then we let Seattle have the conch in the fourth quarter.  They out-gained us by 100 yards and took the lead back before we hit an unexpected, come from behind, 56-yard bomb to set up the game-tying FG as time expired.

Hayden:  “See, what had happened wuz…”

And then in OT, it was all Seattle, as we never once touched the ball.  They put together a 13-play, 80-yard TD drive while converting all three third downs as our defense stood around looking confused.  And Seattle walked away with only their second road win in 7 games this year, giving us only our second home loss in 7 games this year.

6. marshall

Even Marshall’s “Tebow” didn’t help

Offense
With another makeshift O-Line, our offense blocked exceptionally well.  We ran for 132 yards (a 4.1 yard average), allowed only one sack and gave Cutler plenty of time.  And this is a Seattle defense that had 8 sacks against GB in the first half alone.  But you have to convert on a fourth and 1 if your coach calls for it, and that responsibility falls on the line.

If only Jonathan Scott had shown this kind of gusto on that 4th and 1

The Butler started 7-9 (77.7%) for 94 yards (10.4/attempt) and a TD, giving him a 147.2 QBR at the end of the first quarter.  But then he went 6 for his next 12 for only 64 yards (5.3/att) and a 65.9 QBR before throwing his second TD at the end of the 3rd quarter.  He only threw 2 passes in the 4th, though his last was the bomb on the first play of our last drive with only 20 seconds remaining.  He finished 17-26 for 233 yards, 9.0/att, 2 TD’s, 0 INT’s and a 119.6 QBR.

As usual, you couldn’t tell if we won or lost from Cutler’s facial expression

Marshall was the one bright spot.  He had a game-high 10 catches for a season-high 165 yards.  He now has 91 catches for 1,182 yards, which puts him on pace for 121 catches and 1,576 yards.  He’s only 9 receptions and 218 yards shy of these Bears records already.  And though “My Name Is” Earl Bennett dropped a couple passes, he did catch one for a TD.

Bennett almost pulled a Johnny Knoxville and lost a vertebrae

Defense
At times the defense looked its typical stellar self.  But at other times, we looked like we couldn’t stop water running out of a faucet with our hands on the knobs.  We allowed 176 yards rushing and 283 yards passing for an average of 6.5 yards per play over 71 plays.  We also let Seattle go 9-16 on third and fourth downs.

Peanut:  “What the?”

All Seattle’s points were scored in the final two and a half minutes of each half, and we allowed them to take the lead with less than 30 seconds left in both halves.  And in their last 2 possessions (both of which came after there was less than 4 minutes left in regulation), Seattle had 10 first downs on 177 yards, and scored 13 of their 23 points.

Outlook
GB caught us, but Minni and Detroit (sucks!) both lost again.  We have a 2-game lead on the final Wild Card spot with 4 to play.  We go to Minni on Sunday for a rematch of last week before hosting GB in what will be the biggest game of our season.

Nick Roach:  “Shiiiihhhh…”

After starting our season 7-1, it’s crazy to think at this point in the season that though we could still finish 12-4 and possibly host all post season games unless we face Hotlanta, we could also finish 8-8 and be on the outside looking in.

Quotes to Note
Lovie on the loss:  “That hasn’t happened to us very often around here.  Terrible job I did getting our football team ready.  Thought we were ready to go.”

13. lovie

This is Lovie’s “so pissed off, I’m gonna shank somebody” face

Lovie on the fourth and 1:  “Should’ve taken the field goal in a game like that.  Felt like we had momentum, wanted to really kinda try to knock them out and get them on their heels a little bit.  That was a big play in the game…You gotta be able to pick up a fourth and short like that.”  He also said he’d call it again, but I doubt that will happen.

14. andre gurode

Newly signed lineman Andre Gurode: “Damn, this how we gone lose my first Bear game?!”

Lovie:  “Disappointing for all of us.  Thank god we have more games to play to get this bad taste out of our mouth.  We’re not that type of football team.  Looking at the big picture though, we’re 8-4.  We don’t have a lot of time to feel sorry for ourself, we have the Vikings coming up here quickly, so we gonna look at this video, take the punishment for it, and then go from there.”

15. idonije

Idonije:  “Kill my landlord.”

Cutler on running out of receivers:  “Yeah, guys are falling down, getting a little bit of the injury bug, some guys are getting knocked out…Just have to roll with the guys we got.”

16. thomas & bush

J.T. Thomas to Bush: “Don’t cry, bro.  (Sniff, sniff.)  Just don’t cry.”

Cutler on losing after coming back:  “We don’t lose many games like that here…have a lead that late in the fourth quarter…Offensively, we should’ve done a better job and not put ourselves in that position.”

17. bennett

Bennett:  “Damn!  We lost, I got a concussion AND my nipples hurt!”

Jim Miller:  “Credit the offensive line, (Cutler) didn’t really get hit til the second half.”  And he didn’t really even get hit in the second half.

17. weems

Weems:  “I ain’t even trying to look at the scoredboard.”

Jim Miller:  “Once (Bennett) left the game, it was a two man show…Let’s be honest, this offense is a two-man fast break.  It’s Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall.”

18. kid

Hopefully this kid learned a valuable lesson, that god will never answer
your prayers because either he doesn’t exist, or he hates the Bears

Announcer Chris Myers before kickoff:  “The 8-3 Chicago Bears playing host to the 6-5 Seattle Seahawks from Soldier Field in an old school, throw back style, mix it up kinda game.”  Really?  Exactly how does one determine how a game is being played before the game even starts?  Jackass.
