10. Bears’ 8th Loss Just More Of The Same

This season is weird.  You can’t NOT watch, but when you do, it doesn’t really keep your attention.  So you just have the game on in the background.  But this one carried some personal baggage.  We were facing Robbie “I Now Miss FG’s For NY” Gould, who makes much, much less than we paid him to miss for us.  It was his big chance to show us what we were missing.  But we already knew what we were missing – FG’s and Extra Points.  We just wanted to do that more economically.  Well, Gould made his only FG attempt, but he missed 2 of his 3 XPT’s.  And Connor “I Think I’m Gonna” Barth continued his “every other” streak, going 1/2 on both FG’s and XPT’s.  In the end, the Giants won the game.  But by spending less per missed kick, I think we all know who won the battle of the shitty kickers here.

The Low Down
This one started off about as good as it gets.  We scored on our first 3 possessions (TD, FG, TD) for the first time in 19 games, while gaining almost 200 yards.  But we never scored again, gaining only about 100 the rest of the way, as we punted 6 times (including 3-and-outing 5 times in the 2nd half), missed a FG and threw a pick.  Despite the urging of Michelle Obama, the Bears simply refuse to play a full 60 minutes.

Our defense kept us in it, but only until halftime.  The Giants scored once on their first 2 drives (TD, Punt), as we ran out to a 10-point lead.  But then they scored on their next 3 (FG, TD, TD).  NY did nothing the rest of the way, punting on their final 5 drives, but they didn’t need to because we were too busy punting it back to them.  And getting hurt.

Our defense resorted to tackling other defenders,
which didn’t end well for Leonard “Stiff Neck” Floyd

We did have one final chance, getting the ball with 3 minutes left, trailing by 6, starting at our 33.  But we responded by committing 3 penalties, getting sacked, and turning it over.  Despite completing 2 passes for 58 yards, and having a 1st down at the NY 30, we wound up throwing an INT from our own 43 on 2nd-and-29 with a minute left.  Yup, Jay threw that pass just 10 yards ahead of where we caught the punt.

Cutler was hot early, though.  In the first half, he was 11/14 (79%) for 126 yards, a TD, and a 128.0 QBR, and he wasn’t sacked in the first 3 quarters.  But as the tides turned, so did the pressure on him.  He wound up getting sacked 4 times on our 5 fourth-quarter drives.  He finished 17/30 (57%) for 252 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT and an 81.5 QBR.  Before the pick, which was just a toss up in the final minute, the Butler’s QBR was a 98.6.  So this one wasn’t on him.

As bad as Gould and Barth feel, I bet Jay feels worse today

If Barth Bag would’ve made all his kicks, we would’ve only been down by 2 on our final drive, and would’ve only needed a FG for the win.  But with Barth kicking, we would’ve missed it, so I guess it doesn’t really matter.  And since we lost by 6, and Gould only had 4 points out of a possible 6, at least he didn’t beat us.  No, this game we beat ourselves.  But hey, at least we’re not paying our kicker “Robbie money!”

Barth

Barth literally looked like he was gonna barth

Doubtlook
At 2-8, we’d have to win all of our remaining 6 games just to finish 8-8.  And while 4 of them are at home (where we’re .500), Detroit (sucks!) and Minni both won, putting them in a tie for first at 6-4.  So we’re 4 games behind 2 teams with 6 to play.  Not.  Gonna.  Happen.  As for the Wild Card, the only NFC team with fewer wins than us is the 49ers (1-9), so that’s out of the question as well.

Floyd was the lucky one – he got out while the getting was still good

Onto the draft.  Cleveland is 0-11, so they’ve all but locked up the #1 pick.  SF would be #2.  JAX, who beat us, is the only other team with 8 losses.  So it looks like we’re targeting the #3 overall pick.  Now if we can just keep Hillary-ing it up for 6 more weeks!

I’m not sure what this is called, but it was ruled an incompletion

Quotes of Note
John Lynch on Cutler during our last drive: “Do you know what beats the wind?  Arm strength.  No one has arm strength like this guy in this league right now.  He just has an absolute cannon.  He was a rookie when I was with the Denver Broncos.  He’s broken a couple of my fingers.” ~ You know what else beats the wind?  A good kicker.  Buh dum bump.

sitton

Josh “On This Cart I’m” Sitton wasn’t pleased with the Tribune’s
caption for this pic: “Bears OT Nick Becton is carted off the field.”
BTW, Nick Becton isn’t on either team’s roster.

Comcast’s Chris Boden on our final drive:  “This is just a sign of a team that can’t get out of its own way sometimes.” ~ Sometimes, Chris?

See?  I told you #71 was Sitton!

    worm and laurie,

thanks for your responses, and thanks for reading!

my apologies on the sweepstakes. the answer is that jay is wearing navy sleeves under a navy jersey, and white under white. he used to contrast the sleeve colors.

as for SF, we get them at home, otherwise i think we lose that game. interestingly, i just read on ESPN that it’s the only game we’re favored to win the rest of the way.

    thanks, obamas.
