There’s nothing like waiting until the halfway point of your season to start playing. But that’s just what the Bears did this year, putting themselves in a 3-5 hole before they even got going. Since then, though, they’ve managed to win 4 out of 5, keeping their season alive for at least another week. And while they didn’t gain any ground in the playoff hunt, they did beat their first veteran starting QB in months, and they did it on the offensive side of the ball. But because they waited so long to show up, none of it even matters if they don’t finish strong, like bull. And get some help from other teams. And maybe get some calls to go their way. And a couple-two-tree opponent injuries. And some luck. Lots and lots of luck.
Is that mofo smiling for the camera MID-PLAY?!
The Low Down
The Cowboys came out gunning, starting off with a 9-minute, 17-play, TD drive. And Trubisky responded by throwing a pick on our 1st drive. At that point, our season went into cardiac arrest for at least the 13th time. But Dallas didn’t score again until the game was out of reach, as Mitch put up 24 straight points on his next 4 drives. His QBR peaked early in the 4th quarter at 123.3, right before he RAN for a score. He finished 23 of 31 for 244 yards, 3 TD’s, and 1 INT (115.5), along with 63 yards rushing. In a game that we needed him to produce, albeit a couple months late, he did just that. And more.
He also caught a pass from himself, and then got jiggy with it
The Cowboys did put up 17 points in the 4th quarter, but we carried a double-digit lead into the 2nd half, and kept it until the last 0:08. So don’t let the final score (31-24) fool you. The Bears committed just 4 penalties, punted only 4 times, and went 7 for 12 (58.3%) on 3rd down. That’s a team that came ready to play. LB Nick “No Quit” Kwiatkoski led us with 10 tackles, RB David “3 Card Monte” Montgomery led us with 86 rushing yards, and TE J.P. “The Figure-Four Leg-Lock Is One Of My Favorite” Holtz led us with 56 yards receiving. It was a thorough shellacking, with plenty of whoop-ass to go around.
Dak? Say hello to Mack. He’s gonna go ahead
and keep your QBR under 60 til the 4th quarter.
Doubtlook
We did all we could this week, keeping the #4 Wild Card spot, while getting back to a game over .500 (7-6) for the 1st time in 2 months. But it isn’t enough – at least not yet. GB (10-3) still has a 3-game lead on us in the division, which makes them all but impossible to catch. Likewise with the #1 WC, SEA (10-3). But then there’s the less insurmountable: the #2, MIN (9-4), who we beat, and the #3, LAR (8-5), who beat us. Considering tie-breakers, in essence, we have to make up 2 games on each of them, and there’s only 3 left. That’s the bad news.
Did anyone else notice that our leading receiver was
some tatted-up white boy that we’ve never heard of?
And here’s some even worse news. First, even though GB is out of reach, we have to beat them next week. 2nd, we have to beat KC the week after. 3rd, we have to beat MIN in 3 weeks. 4th, the Vikes have to lose to either LAC or GB. And 5th (as well as 6th), the Rams have to lose 2 of their final 3 (DAL, SF & AZ). Yeah, it’s that bad. The good news? Well, if the Vikes and Rams both lose-out (which would mean we beat MIN on 12/29), even with a Bear loss to either GB or KC, we could still advance. But that’s so unlikely, now that I think about it, it’s actually also bad news. So, it’s probably just best if we all pray really hard. And the Bears win-out.
This is what going 0-4 against winning teams gets you
Quotes of Note
In the Fox studio during pre-game coverage, Michael Strahan referred to our QB as: “Mith Trubit-sky.” ~ Is it really asking too much for this guy to take a speech class?
Who thinkth Sthrahan needth a thpeeth clath? Raithe your hand.
Announcer Troy Aikman, after Mitch’s pick on our 1st drive: “And that’s one Trubisky should never have even attempted…I don’t know what Mitch saw in trying to fit that ball in (there).” ~ Sadly, the announcers’ negativity toward Truby Tuesday picked up right where it left off last week.
3 Card Monte told these suckers to talk to
the hand, and it appears as though they did
The worst announcer in sports, Joe Buck, after Mitch’s 3rd TD pass halfway through the 3rd quarter, as if someone handed him a memo during the commercial break telling him to be more complimentary of the Trubes: “Another 3-TD game for Trubisky, for the 2nd straight week…It’s all Chicago, 24 unanswered points…Trubisky is impressive again.” ~ Finally. But “again?” All you did was rip him last week!
Mitch gets wind that the booth finally paid him a compliment
Aikman, early in the 4th quarter, still refusing to buy in and/or unable to read a memo: “Wow, that was a really risky throw by Trubisky…he lays this one (up, and) there’s a lot of bodies there.” ~ At that point, Mitch was 20 of 26 (77%) for 205 yards and 3 TDs.
He also had just 20 fewer rushing yards than either RB, Troy
Buck, mid-way through the 4th quarter, in that bitchey-wife tone of his, struggling to avoid the use of a back-handed compliment: “What a night for Trubisky…Matt Nagy’s done a really, really good job of bringing this young QB out of a funk, and he’s playing great football right now.” ~ Wait, was he in a funk, or was this his 2nd “impressive” game in a row, Joe?
Nagy to Trubisky: “You don’t suck anymore! Woo-hoo!”
Aikman, shortly thereafter, apparently after the memo was read to him: “This is the shining moment of his young career.” ~ My money says that that quote was fed to him verbatim.
Coach Garrett to Nagy: “Hey, Coach! Did you get
my resume? I left you a copy over on the sideline.”
Aikman, with 4 minutes left, buying in hook, line and sinker: “But how good is this by Mitch Trubisky?…I’ve sure enjoyed watching him. He’s just grown right in front of our eyes here over the last couple of weeks.” ~ I mean, he really launched himself onto the Trubandwagon head first there, didn’t he?
#98 to Nagy: “Hey Coach! Did you get Garrett’s resume? He kept
telling me to tell you that he left you a copy over on the sideline.”
BEAR DOWN!
