12. Bears Squeak Out 5th Win in a Row in Detroit

You can only beat the team in front of you on any given Sunday.  Well the Bears have now done that 5 weeks in a row.  And as we all start putting up our aluminum poles (with its “very high strength-to-weight ratio”) and prepping for Festivus, our 9-3 record gives us plenty to celebrate.  Though our last 5 opponents are a combined 23-37 (.383) and Detroit started a 3rd string QB with only 104 NFL passes under his helmet, a W is always a good thing – unless of course you’re talking about Hurricane Katrina or Iraq.  The Bears just won’t be hoisting any “Mission Accomplished” banners just yet.

Offensively we played pretty well against a stellar defensive line.  Though we allowed 4 sacks, we did have 21 first downs, were 5-9 on third downs and put up 24 points without getting any turn-overs.  We’re 53% on third downs during our 5-game winning streak.  The Butler completed 80% of his passes (21-26 for 234 yards), which ties his career best.  He only threw 1 TD, but he didn’t throw any picks.  He’s now thrown 10 TD’s and only 3 INT’s in our last 5 games.

Defensively, we were decent – except for a few plays.  We gave up a TD in the first quarter, but Detroit had a short field after returning a punt to our 38.  And we did stumble when we allowed a 2-play, 91-yard drive with under a minute left in the first half.  But after Cutler fumbled on our second play of the second half and the Lions recovered on our 9, we held them to a FG – Detroit’s only points in the second half.  Urlacher, in the midst of a phenomenal year, had 16 tackles – the second most of his career behind the 19 he had against AZ in the “The Bears are who we thought they were!” game in ‘06.

Game Ball
After 152 career FG’s (and 85.4% accuracy), Robbie Gould kicked his longest ever – 54 yards.  He kicked a 52-yarder last year and a 53-yarder earlier this season.  At this rate, he’ll probably kick a 60-yarder in the Supa Bow.

Summary
Most people say we’re the worst 9-3 team ever, and that we’ve only beaten 2 good teams (GB and Philly).  But most people are stupid.  Our second half schedule looked pretty imposing a couple months ago.  But due to injuries to the teams we’ve played, it’s been so easy that nobody would even notice our win streak if we hadn’t beaten Philly.  But we did beat Philly, so take note bitches!

The 4th quarter of our season will definitely be our toughest – we host NE on Sunday (3:15 CST), go to Minni, host the Jets and go to GB.  But we’re playing our best ball in 4 years (before this season, we were 23-25 since winning SB 41), and we have a 1-game lead over GB (who goes to Detroit and NE, then hosts the Giants and us).  So it’s the perfect time for it, and we’ll either play our way in – or out – of the playoffs.  I’m predicting a Festivus miracle.

Super Bowl, Super Bears!

Which uncle? Although I didn’t watch much of this game, what I did see was a team different from when they out played the Eagles. Sometimes you need luck to get the W.
Are you singing the “Super Bowl Shuffle” yet?

After the Bear win yesterday, I’m reminded of what a great man once said….”It’s easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you’ve got the stock market beat. But the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat.” That man, Ted Knight, RIP. Just like the Patsy’s, Vikes, Jets and Pack will do the next 4 weeks….RIP.

Go Bears! Go Stan! Here’s to the Jets and Pats beating each each other up tonight so bad , that the Bear will face more 3rd string QB’s to come.

uncle jerry, thx for reading and thx for your senseless comment. there was no luck in sunday’s game – unless you consider it “luck” that we drafted urlacher, signed peppers and traded for cutler. and yes – i sing the super bowl shuffle everyday. what song do you sing for your giants? oh yeah, they don’t have a song. ha-ha!

donnie g, thx for reading and for your post. but don’t be obsessed with your desires donny. the zen philosopher basha once wrote, “a flute with no holes, is not a flute. a donut with no hole, is a danish.”

    bear down!
