8. Bears Lose 4th Straight, And It’s Even Worse Than That Sounds

Don’t look now, but the Bears have become good at something:  losing close games.  We’ve lost our last 4 by a total of 23 points, an average of just under 2 FGs.  To some, that’s a reason for optimism.  But Trubisky took another step back, starting with 5 straight 3-and-outs.  This put our D on the field twice as long as our O, which enabled Philly to gain over 200 yards in the 1st half, as our defense committed 6 penalties.  The Eagles scored on their first 3 drives, ran out to a 19-0 lead, and saddled us with our 5th loss.  The Bears are now like Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria – we’ve gone 11 months without power.  And our only hope is if we can get Trump to toss us some paper towels soon.

They beat us when WE had Howard, and then they beat us
when THEY had Howard.  And we had Mack BOTH times!

The Low Down
As has become typical for the Bears, the score (22-14) doesn’t accurately depict just how lopsided this game was.  Though it was only 3-0 after the 1st quarter, at that point, the Eagles had out-gained us 122 yards to -1 (which we were able to achieve on 2 yards passing and -3 rushing).  And though it was just 12-0 at the half, by then we had punted 6 times, gotten sacked 3 times, and gained only 9 yards on 20 plays.  It was a 1st half failure for the ages.

Should we just go ahead and call this rock bottom?

And though we did score 2 straight TDs in the 2nd half, and somehow only trailed by 5 for most of the 4th quarter, we wound up punting on all 8 of our other possessions.  That is if you don’t count when we fumbled our return of the Eagles’ last punt with 0:25 left as a “possession.”  Sure, Philly punted 5 times themselves, but they also scored 5 times.  And they ate 8 ½ of the final 9 minutes with a 15-play FG drive to seal it.  No, this one was never close, even when it was.

Trubisky:  “You’re asking ME what YOU do on this play?
I don’t even know what I’M supposed to do on this play.”

Though Wentz’s 91.7 QBR was only 25 points higher than Trubisky’s demonic 66.6, Wentz threw 18 more times, completed 16 more (1 for a TD), and gained 114 more yards.  Those margins alone would score him a 111.6.  And if you take away Trubisky’s best pass (the lucky 53-yarder), even without a turnover, his QBR falls to 54.8.  So like the final score, the only thing the QB numbers show is how misleading QB numbers can be.  Even Trubisky’s mother would admit that they weren’t even close.

Doesn’t it look like Trubisky’s aiming for the defender?
The Eagle guy is even is waving to him that he’s open!

Doubtlook
At 3-5, we’re stuck in the cellar, and we squandered a shot at moving up on GB (7-2) and MIN (6-3), who both lost.  We did maintain a solid grip on 8th place in the Wild Card race, but we blew a chance to leap-frog Philly (5-4) into 5th, and failed to pass #6 DET (3-4-1) and #7 AZ (3-5-1) when they both lost.  Yes, we’re so bad, that the 2 teams who tied this year are ahead of us because of that very tie.

8 punts, and none blocked.  This knucklehead was our MVP!

Quotes of Note
Lance Briggs, on Trubisky:  “He wasn’t horrible, he did make some throws…(but) his receivers didn’t help…Tarik Cohen couldn’t catch a cold today.” ~ Wouldn’t it be HILARIOUS if Briggs had to call in sick next week?

The Eagles even took to thunder-munching Trubisky
because they heard how well it worked for the Saints

Announcer Dick Stockton, 24 minutes in:  “7 penalties already called on the Bears, most of them on the defensive side.” ~ We committed our 8th penalty on the next play, which happened to be on the offense.  Which is good because it means the Bears were really striving for a balance there.

Trubisky:  “Guys, we need some more penalties.
You know, so the defense doesn’t look so bad.”

Stockton, a couple minutes later:  “It’s amazing the way the Bears are playing defensively…they’re only down by 2 field goals.” ~ Philly scored their 1st TD about 30 seconds later. ~ Maybe Dick should change his name to Nostra-dick-mas.

Nostradamus’s blind uncle, No-see-damus, could’ve
seen which way this one was going from the 1st snap!

Stockton, after we cut the lead to 5 early in the 4th:  “And so the Bears…have climbed back from, not scoreboard oblivion, but oblivion with the way the game has been played.” ~ He kept using that word.  I do not think it means what he thinks it means.

Trubisky:  “You guys with me?  If you are, take a knee real quick.”

An actual question asked of Nagy:  “How jarring is it to see where your team is at right now?” ~ Yup, we’re using a question as a quote because it reflects that it’s now beyond debate whether or not the Bears’ season is “jarring.”  The only question that remains is HOW jarring.

Nagy:  “Even No-see-damas could’ve seen this one coming!”

    Worminator,

Thanks for reading, and thanks for your comment.

I think our blog is at least partly responsible for your belief this year. We were REALLY talking them up. And if the Bears do still have a first round pick in 2021, we probably won’t have it for long.

Our backup QB is just a smidge better than me. Or you. And that’s just not the answer we’re looking for.

    Bear down!
